Job Summary

Reporting to the Operations Distribution Center Manager, this position has primary responsibility for ensuring that orders are filled at the distribution center for delivery company wide. The position also ensures that merchandise sold by our sales team or at the branch retail store locations is shipped complete and accurately in a timely manner.  The Shipping Manager works closely with all departments to effectively and productively fill orders company wide.  Manages the activities of two shipping supervisors.  The Shipping Manager participates in management of all distribution center employees across departments. 

Major Responsibilities

  • Prioritizes the work for entire crew, communicating directives to the supervisory staff.
  • Meets daily with department managers company wide, including branch management associates, Sales, Purchasing and Operations management, to discuss prior day and current issues.
  • Oversees all Human Resources processes including those involving interviewing, selection, hiring, and training.
  • Completes annual performance reviews and 90 day reviews on all staff
  • Determines pay raises and bonuses for year end reviews
  • Delivers any disciplinary actions to the staff, coaches and counsels on deficiencies and monitors progress. Resolves conflicts and keep employees motived and on task. Makes recommendations to Operations Distribution Center Manager for movement of employees.
  • Participates in and oversees the training progress of new employees and makes recommendations to the Operations Distribution Center Manager for employee development.
  • Tracks employee time off and tardiness. Ensures timecards are accurate before they are given to Payroll.
  • Makes daily decisions on whether or not overtime is needed from other departments to help finish off the day
  • Responsible for workplace safety and that personal protective equipment is being used consistently and properly.
  • Responsible for truck safety and any corrective actions that need to be taken to make them safely operable. When breakdowns occur, arranges for replacement vehicle to keep on schedule.
  • Coordinates with the Service and Rental department to make sure all deliveries are made as promised.
  • Works with IT Department to continuously enhance system.
  • Responsible for the development of management skills in the Supervisory level employees.
  • Identifies products that can be used in the distribution center to make the jobs safer and more comfortable for the employees
  • Works with the Accounting Department regarding any questions on payment at point of sale
  • Responsible for making sure items are transferred to other branches, making sure they are done correctly and efficiently
  • Completes accident reports for employees and vehicle accident reports
  • Participates in decisions regarding delivery times, route schedules and other logistics to delivering the product.
  • Ensures that distribution center is kept orderly and clean during production and at end of shift
  • Proactively address any problems that arise by keeping processes, rules and procedures in place.
  • Conducts weekly staff meeting at which all issues, commendations and changes are discussed.
  • Assists in fulfilling special orders that require additional attention.
  • Performs stock counts to ensure that stock levels are accurate
  • Works with Inventory Control and the Maintenance Department to work on creation of additional storage space in both the main distribution center and the branch locations
  • Communicates with drivers daily at days end to review deliveries and address any re-ships or returns
  • Inspect all trucks to make sure they are loaded correctly throughout the day and night and that all truck loads are secure and orderly.
  • Rechecks all orders for Hardware Spot to determine if they were picked correctly and shipped the most costly effective way
  • Prepares and processes UPS and freight bills for outbound shipment, ensuring they are paid and charged to the customer if applicable.
  • Creates and tracks customer feedback cards. Disseminates information to management staff. Makes suggestions for changes/improvements
  • Occasionally fills in with picker/packer responsibilities including the sorting of product and movement through the established system
  • Participates in management meetings and branch training sessions
  • Mentors new hires in distribution center processes and operations
  • Participates in both outside and on line training
  • May make deliveries in company vehicle as needed and dispatch vehicles throughout the day
  • May be asked to inspect product to determine if it is in saleable condition
  • May be asked to key purchase orders or after hour sales orders
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • High school degree or equivalent.
  • Must have valid drivers license to attend off site visits and operate company vehicles. Must meet all DOT requirements to have valid driver file in place
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a distribution environment
  • Fleet management background preferable
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize work and perform multiple tasks
  • Must have excellent time management skills
  • Must be proficient on the FACTS or similar software as well as Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills including speaking, reading and writing in the English language.
  • Must have excellent customer service skills and demonstrate a customer service mindset when dealing with internal and external customers

 

Essential functions:

  • Ability to lift up to 75 pounds
  • Must be able to climb stairs, crouch, bend, stoop, kneel and work in small spaces and work in various climates
  • Must be able to enter and exit vehicles at all entrances
  • Ability to review and interpret computer images and written documents
  • Analytical ability including basic math skills
  • Ability to listen to and interpret customers needs
  • Communication skills including speaking, reading and writing

Additional Comments:

 

Must be able to work a flexible schedule and travel to branch locations.  Excellent attendance, punctuality and customer service mindset are mandatory.
